More Women Are Giving Guns, Shooting Clubs a Shot (ABC Nightline tonight)

Last edited Sat Mar 9, 2013, 01:38 PM - Edit history (1)

Found this on the Nightline Facebook page. Thoughts?

(By the way, Nightline is now on at 12:37am E/P and 11:37 Central & elsewhere, as Jimmy Kimmel Live now precedes Nightline and ends nearly 3 decades of ABC having Nightline on against CBS and NBC late night shows after the local news.)

For the Sure Shots, a women-only shooting league in Austin, Texas, girl power equals firepower.

"You have to think defensively all the time," said Holly Gaylor, a mother of two. "You have to think about it when you are in your car, you have to think about it when you are at the grocery store, I mean, it just takes a second for everything to change."

More women than ever now own guns -- a record 23 percent, according to Gallup polls. The surprising spike has spawned a cottage industry from Hello Kitty-decorated assault rifles to bling-ed out revolvers, like the one tweeted by Kim Kardashian.

But make no mistake. The women of the Sure Shots are dead serious about the right to bear arms.

What first popped in my mind: an internet meme that suggests that right wingers would not like it if women used guns to protect reproductive rights:

and then I remember this story http://jezebel.com/5924437/is-it-wrong-to-call-this-20+year+old-who-punched-a-street-harasser-a-hero of a woman who boasted online about punching a man on the street she heard talking about raping another woman. And previously I posted my response to suggestions that the girlfriend of the late football player Jovan Belcher should've been armed. My response would be that right wingers would instantly speculate murder instead of self-defense and play the "false accusations" card...we've got a big problem in this country of men who believe that women more frequently falsely accuse of domestic violence/rape than are victims.

And look at the quote from the first woman interviewed for the story: "You have to think defensively all the time...in your car, you have to think about it when you are at the grocery store"...oh my, is this the new fear-crime-all-the-time America?

they'll stop being drones for a movement that destroys their rights to safety.

Together we can make progress on 2A rights and push back...

it's mostly just about paying attention to what is going on around you. A prudent thing to do, might cut down on car accidents and other types of accidents as well. Far too many people are in their own little world as they go through their day to day activities.

seeing as there are female murders, serial killers and other violent criminals out there as well.

As for the evolving part, I wouldn't suggest holding your breath. As a species, we've been killing each since forever and I doubt we'll make the jump anytime soon.

good luck with all that continuing to be offensive in thought and deed.

meanwhile, as a female, I will keep my options open as to defend myself as I see fit.

IMO, there is little track record of our species to justify a human nature, esp. one equipped with so powerful a mind, and cognizance to come up with both rapid change and the fatalism that we can't change our way. Human nature is a chesnut everyone roasts in the microwave.

in men's attitudes, indeed life choices about aggression or offensive-ness. I'm not sure all displays of aggression -- sports, debate -- are a bad thing, but I hear men questioning the benefits of "ambition" and even tireless "innovation," not convinced that these will show benefits as constantly proclaimed.

The challenge for everyone is how new values will be legitimized as the old means, mass communication, continues its collapse.

As a result, all this is anecdotal.

curve.

We are all, to some degree, a product of the times in which we are born.

It is why I do not like the institutional dynamic of white male power.

yes, these men have an advantage but, it is no more their fault that they were born into into any more than it is another person's fault that they were born the way they were. Men that are seeking to change the power structure and level the playing field are to be commended and less chastised.

depending on a shrinking upper mid class. And the majority of whites are struggling and falling into the "walking poor." Losing hope of ever advancing, they cling to ideologies which only purport to keep them from sliding back, and I.d. Enemies. Worse, the Democratic Party has largely abandoned issues which could change conditions for most because they no longer confront corporate power & the FR. And many progs. have lost the "tradition" of solidarity, and have learned to join the battle against racist reactionairies, the poorer the better.

Democrats have culturally cast poor whites out into the cold; the RW shoves them into an animal shed and feeds them cheap candy.
