Saw an interesting bit on the latest smartgun technology tonight.

I am still skeptical from a safety standpoint because I think it is a mistake for anyone to think that a gun can be made "smart". Smart guns short circuit the 4 fundamental safety rules. No one should ever think that a gun is "smart" or "safe". A kid grows up around a "smart" gun and goes to a home where a "dumb" gun is and blammo---- tragedy.
Nothing beats education... even if that education is "never touch it" (assuming the curious kid follows that kind of advice).
At any rate.
I probably wouldn't depend on one of these (suppose your hand with the ring on it were injured... suppose your spouse had the "smart" gun and it didn't work). I certainly think it would be a mistake to require them (unless the technology were so good that police departments were adopting it). However, I think the NRA is wrong to come out against them per se.
The real answer is that of course these things should be on the market. A person should be able to decide what is appropriate for their own home and own situation. If this is the technology they want... by all means... just train and treat it like a "dumb" gun please.

(10,136 posts)In term of reliability, we are probably not there yet. But the tech has taken some huge steps forward.

(12,164 posts)I taught my boys that all guns are loaded. If you took one apart for cleaning - when the last part snaps in place the gun is loaded-period.
Edited to add: and don't ever point a gun at anything unless you intend to shoot it.

(2,927 posts)... because all the B&J Ice Cream I've ever seen is OU Kosher.
But, the meat-flavoured ice cream is an example of government programs courtesy of P.J. O'Rourke -- America's funniest (deliberately) Libertarian -- Ron Paul doesn't count because he's not funny on purpose.
If the government decides that meat-flavoured ice cream is good for you -- they will start a Public Service Campaign, TV and Print ads extolling the virtues of MF Ice Cream. If that doesn't work, they will subsidize people who want to open MF Ice Cream shops and set artificially low prices on MF Ice Cream. If that doesn't work, they will mandate MF Ice Cream be served at public schools. If the market becomes surfeit with un-eaten MF Ice Cream (how could it not) they will begin to pay people NOT to serve MF Ice Cream ... on and on and on.
"Smart" Guns are a perfect example of meat-flavoured ice cream -- something no one wants but which our leaders might determine is in our best interests.
