Facing outcry, Maine newspaper drops request for gun permit info

(Reuters) - A Maine newspaper's request for information about gun permit owners ignited such an outcry among gun-rights advocates and state lawmakers that on Friday the newspaper withdrew it.

In a repeat of an uproar that occurred in a New York City suburb last month, The Bangor Daily News had asked for public records that included the names and addresses of concealed weapon permit holders. Facing fierce criticism, however, it rescinded the request.

"We are disappointed with the reaction to our request, which we felt was with the best intentions to help study issues affecting Maine through an analysis of publicly available data," the newspaper said in an editor's note published on Friday.

"We will continue our reporting, but will use other sources of information to do so," the newspaper said.

2. Good.

Divulging PII is not necessary, and would've been correctly treated as an attack on the privacy of citizens exercising their rights.

4. That's what I thought

The only thing registration ever seems to get used for is outing people who haven't done anything to anyone.

Can anyone post an example of gun registration being the critical link in solving a crime? There are enough jurisdictions where registration is required. How's it worked out there? I'll bet registration information has been the lynchpin in a case... or a miniscule number of cases.

5. The medias bloodlust is unending....

These people would love nothing more than see legal gun owners become victims. Their whole goal is to release some names and get lucky enough that someone on the list ends up robbed and hopefully attacked.

7. Depends on what they planned to do with it, I think. I've always been pretty staunchly

in favor of personal privacy on this topic (and anything similar), and what the NY paper did was totally improper and unacceptable in my opinion. But on the other hand, the investigation into LA Sheriff Baca's alleged cronyism relies on these data. So I'm a bit conflicted now - there do seem to be some legitimate media uses for this info...
