But doubt has been cast on its accuracy: https://vanguardofhollywood.com/was-jimmy-stewart-racist/

The above article explains why the sources of this rumor need to be taken with a large grain of salt and also gives quite a bit of evidence that Stewart was not racist. After reading it, I am convinced that the rumor is based on very shaky ground at best.

In other words, based on the information in this article, I don't believe the rumor is true, but others are welcome to look at the evidence and draw their own conclusions.

My late father between jobs from Douglass aircraft and luckily hired @ GM 2 years later was a driver for many a Hollywood celeb for 2 years. He knew Woody Strode and many other black/white actors and you'd know who they all were, but since they're all deceased I won't bring them up specifically, but will say that to a person all of the black celebs said that Stewart was racist. All my late Dad did was say that he loved the Movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (he really didn't like that movie, he wanted to illicit response from those black, and all 4 had nothing positive to say about Stewart). As far as the information you mention, whose info do we believe? Yes, John Wayne was said to have grabbed Stewart when Stewart allegedly heard the N word said about or to a black person, but Wayne was a racist himself. He did an interview in May 1971 with Playboy, and it was hideously racist. and we all know what he said about blacks in that interview (Native Americans were low on his list also as far as human beings were concerned), and he never disavowed what he said in that playboy article. Sammy Davis was a good buddy of Wayne's. I guess Sammy was his kind off N. I saw something mentioned about Duke Ellington in that article you posted, and Duke Ellington was mentioned. My great auntie on my Mom's side knew him when she attended Spellman/graduated from as well knew Ellington. She met him when she used to go visit her sister in NY and they went to a small night club there one night and they met him (can't remember the club name). She told me that after being around him for a length of time that he was a straight up colorist. She told me that she couldn't take his colorism any longer (She was half Cherokee, a quarter black, quarter german--guess she was his kind of Mixed raced friend). Anyway, someone in his band yelled out "Whoever's darker than this bag, get the hell out," and they all laughed, him also. She told me that she told him on many an occasion to not be so colorist, but he ignored her and said that he was joking and to not take things so seriously. Cab Calloway she told me that he always hired light and darker skinned dancers to dance for him at the Cotton Club. Duke, uh not so much. I asked her if he ever tried to date her and she said no, that wasn't their kind of relationship it was just a lot of 'friendns' who knew each other and liked having good times. Anyways, she had a boyfriend at Howard who ended up beinig my great uncle in law, and he was a dear friend of the Late Tom Bradley, my great aunt a friendn of his wife Ethel was a really nice lady. My grerat uncle in law and Bradley met while on the police force here in Los Angeles. Loved both my late grerat anunt/uncle, and misis both everyday. Both my late parents knew very famous people due to the line of work they were in. Friends see those pics of my late parents with these famous people, and they all say to a write a book and post the pics. Can't, because I have no way of backing up anything I say except those pics, and people's relatives are lawsuit happy. Lots of pics of my late parents,, with lots of stories behind them, and that's all I'll ever have since to write about "A story concerning them and my late parents" would make me seem like I'm lying.

To close out, and I go back to my original premise, whose story holds the truth about whom?

Just sayin' ......

I was just going off the information that's publicly available, which seemed less than conclusive to me. Sounds like there's a lot more to the story!

The stuff about Duke Ellington and his colorism is fascinating to me. Looking at some pictures of his band just now seems to be consistent with what you say about his preference for lighter skin. Very interesting.
