I wish I could tell you about Pippin

He is my eighteen year old dachshund. He is lying next to me and he is dying. Tomorrow, he goes back to God.

He came to me at eight weeks and when I saw him a feeling of emotion whooshed through me like water in a torrent. I knew I was supposed to take him and I did. He was a fear biter and a genuinely wonderful, genuinely good little boy. He gave to me everything that was in him and he did it every day of his life asking for nothing more back than food and a hug.

I wish I could tell you how much I love him. He is the last of my family from my parents to the five other dachshunds that made up my family. He is the last one of them that was left. He is my friend, my son, my best buddy.

He is the bravest soul I know. He is blind and deaf, has heart failure and arthritis. Yet he lives his life with dignity and courage. He is so brave. I wish I had the words to tell you how much and how much I will miss him.

He loves me completely. He fills my house with energy, something that has slowly drifted away with each death. His sweet spirit is so bright and warm it makes my house feel like home. Now its leaving. I know he will be taken in by my parents and his brothers and sisters on the other side.

I hope I hear his nails on the wood floor some night like I did the others after they left me. I hope he wakes me from a nap and smiles at me like my sister's dog, Hootch, did the day he died at the hour he died. I had no idea he had passed but he poked me in the chest to wake me up so he could smile at me for goodbye because that is how much I loved him and he loved me.

I wish I could tell you about my Pippin but I have no words tonight. Hug your pets. Tell them you love them. Even when you're tired or busy, stop and acknowledge and help them. Pippin saved my life and now its my turn to help him. Tomorrow I give him back to God with abject thanks. I do so with gratitude for him and for all of them. They saved my life.

Pippin saved my life.

I love you, son.

Cathy, your mother.

5. You have said it so well and so clearly.

They are, indeed, family. It is so hard to let them go.

I wish you all peace.

7. I'm so very sorry

Your post is so heartfelt and full of love and despair that it made me really choke up. Though you may not believe you've told us all about Pippin, you've told us the most vital things, and it rings out clearly through your whole post.

Bless you for giving such excellent love and care to all your fur babies and for helping your dear Pippin on his final journey.

By the way, I had to run and hug my doggie long before I got to the part where you suggested we do. But in both your's and Pippin's honor I ran and hugged him again after I read the whole thing.

9. Bless you both

I want to cry, he is an angel, they all are. I will hug my girl extra at lunch when I go home to let her potty and play some ball with her. Every moment is so precious.

10. You have many word to share Pippin with us.

I'm honored you shared him with us. I live in fear of losing my Bear, who also saved my life, though hopefully I'll have him for another 6 or 7 years. When he goes, my mind and my body be paralyzed and I will be absolutely unable to share his story. You are blessed to have had your Pippin for so many years - almost two decades! I'm sorry for your loss but forever grateful for your love of him.

11. Your post is both beautiful and heartfelt...

Those of us who have lost our beloved furkids know of the pain you are experiencing. We lost our Sammy exactly one year ago and I still miss her very much. I wish you peace in the coming days and weeks as you deal with the loss of your best friend.

14. Update on Pippin

My Pippin left this world about a half an hour ago. He was eighteen, deaf and blind. He had nothing left but he stayed with me in the darkest times I've ever had. I'm on my feet now and I think that sort of made the decision for both of us.

Dogs are God spelled backwards. That is no coincidence.

Thank you, all of you for your kindness. I wish I could tell you how much it means to me but I think most of you already know. He was my last boy out of six, the little one that had a sassy personality, who hummed to himself and was just good. I will miss him but I'm happy that his suffering is over.

Thank you so much and take care. Know you are loved,

Cathy aka Roguevalley, mother of Gretchen, Pippin, Andrew, Tippy, Robby and Timmy. all deceased. (As I write this, a moose is in the yard eating on my trees. Life goes on.)

23. That was an absolutely beautiful tribute

for a beautiful dog from a beautiful person...you deserved each other!

We had two dachshunds when I was a kid. Loved them to death. They were Petty 1 and later Petty 2. I remember when you had Pinnin as an avatar back when Obama was running...such a cute dog...looked like ours...who were mini's.

I'm so very, very sorry for your loss. I went through that with my 16 year old Jack Russell 4 years ago and I still think of him almost daily. We all know how you anguished over that decision and unfortunately most of us have to have done the same.

Get some much needed sleep tonight.

24. Thank you so much. I wish I had the words to tell you all on this thread

how much you helped me and how important you are. It is so weird not having to run home after work to take care of my little boy not even knowing how much he was taking care of me. I hug you all. Thank you all for taking a minute to acknowledge a truly remarkable little dog. i knew this would be the place to come. Thank you all.

26. Beautiful

and I am so very sorry.

I had a horse like that. He just could not go on but he tried and I know he tried for me because we had been so close to the end so many times. I had to let him go peacefully last July. Still can't write about it, miss him like someone took my heart. He took it and he can keep it, grand old fellow he was.

Sending hugs and thoughts to help you through. Pippin will know why and thank you for easing him. I can't write more, there is something in both of my eyes. Be easy roguevalley, the ultimate act of love is yours to give. He will come back, they always do.

EDIT So sorry, I did not see the date I hope you are well
