I heard a weird bumping noise as I approached the back door with the feral's breakfast

I looked out the window and couldn't see anyone or anything. Weird.

Then I opened the inside door and through the window of the screen door I saw Scooter. She was JUMPING up against the door. As soon as she saw me, she pranced off towards the food bowls.

I guess she's really hungry, this morning. All of the bowls were frozen over with 'wintery mix' so I had to do a lot of knocking dishes against the tree to loosen the contents.

She was the only feral out there so she will definitely get her fill. I think the rest are just not eager to venture out into the cold.

It’s a good lesson to learn, and not a particularly easy one to learn.

We got more than an inch of rain overnight. The creek’s way up and the wind is fierce. There are families of birds that come to our feeders, and a little wren will call to me if I’m slow to refill them. She was quite insistent this morning just as the rain tapered off. She and a pair of chickadees will almost eat out of my hand and I always offer it to them. Like my father, of blessed memory, I sing Zippity-doo-dah to them whenever I fill the feeders, whenever I leave the house.

Our furry and feathered friends sure make our world a better place.
