tumors or cancer, major organ disease (liver, bladder, kidney etc). They cannot find the source of the fluids or why he is bleeding more despite having opened him up and run dye through his system to fine the leak.

He is being so sweet and good through the whole thing. Poor Buddy.

Two weeks ago he was running, playing and begging for treats. It seemed the right thing to do to do everything possible. I am just hoping I don't regret putting him through this in the end. I don't want my love to cause him pain. It's hard to know what to do.

you are not doing too much. You will realize when that time comes. And the vets will let you know that there is nothing more to do. If that time comes soon, it will not have been too long that Toby was sick. You have to try before you give up. There is still a chance that they can find the cause. I would not give up yet. Not yet.

This is the strangest illness I have ever heard about....came on so fast and they just can't find a cause. I am so sorry. Don't beat yourself up and don't second guess your decisions.

As well as the one subsequent here in that, regardless of your decisions, there will always be some regret and second guessing.

You know this little guy better than anyone and you will know when he is no longer enjoying being here. I know that sounds a little strange, but I firmly believe that.

I do cat rescue and many of the kitties that find their ways to us have been through hell before getting to us. We don't always have happy endings, and I cry and question over each and every one that we lose. What kind of uncaring human being would I be if I didn't???!!!

But with each one, and there have been many, I find that I've learned something about either cats in general or myself, and I regard that wisdom as a very valuable and centrigal part of the rescue work that I do.

This is a very strange situation with them not being able to find the cause. My hope and my prayers for you and Toby is that someone comes up with a solution!

Please keep us posted and please remember to be gentle with yourself as you pass through this crisis.

And everything you said, too.

Keeping my fingers crossed that they find out what's wrong with Toby and that he can be cured. How sad and scary and frustrating this all must be. With all my fur babies I knew what was wrong with them. I can't imagine having to deal with such a crisis and not having any idea what the problem is.

Whether you do everything possible or let him go comfortably, .... there are always regrets, either way.

As what is causing his situation is unknown, it isn't known for certain that he cannot survive it.

I have a vet, who truly cares. It isn't just a business or a job to her. If you have someone like that, you could talk to them about what to do.

If the pooch is not suffering from his actual condition, (but only from the hassle of trying to find out what it is), I think I would give it more time.

I lost a cat recently, to HCM heart disease. He had an echocardiogram on a Friday that showed his heart filling with blood and no longer pumping effectively. However, my cat was still active, eating and enjoying life. My vet thought he had another month of good life and she thought we could let him live it. On the following Wednesday, he stopped eating. Overnight he lost the use of his back legs. By morning he was gasping for air. I got the cat to my vet's at 6:00am. Her early morning staff telephoned her and she came in and did the euthanasia.

I did regret not letting him go sooner, but at the same time, I knew it was hard to let him go while life was still good for him. My vet felt that maybe she had not tried everything and she very much regretted that. However, she did in fact try everything. The cat had already survived a remarkable 12 years with this heart condition.

That isn't very helpful, but that is what I did.

(edit to add .....) During those 12 years, we also took him to veterinary cardiologists.

he will have weeks of painful recovery if he lives through the illness. The fluids that fill his abdomen contain more blood every time it is drained. He fills up with blood and lymph fluid every few days to the point that it affects his lungs and heart. The draining is scary and hurts him but he will die without them. We are buying time for a diagnosis but the price keeps getting higher and there are no results.
After he is drained he feels better but he is so weak from the surgery it will be heartbreaking to drain him again.

I always watch and enjoy the little videos you make of the pooches playing.

I wonder if some kind of a specialist medical doctor (for people) might recognize from the description, what your little pooch's condition is.
