That's what I do already -- just bust up the shell thoroughly and a lot of times you can squeeze the egg out of the membrane 'bag' holding the shell fragments together. At worst, a few pieces of membrane instead of one. A little running cold water helps, especially if it gets under the membrane.

According to America's Test Kitchen, steam for 6.5 minutes to get the perfect soft-boiled egg. (Haven't tried it myself.)

What I did always was a rolling boiling which released albumin.

What she knows from her mom is letting them sit for 20 minutes in hot water. There is no active water, and they come out perfect.
