Cooking & Baking

Now that I'm retired, I don't do much cooking or baking, but I found a container of peaches I put in the freezer around this time LAST YEAR. I had sliced them, soaked them in Fruit-Fresh to keep the color, sprinkled a little sugar on them, and put them in a plastic container with a lid. And there they sat for a year. I took them out of the freezer last night but I wasn't sure if they would be any good after all that time. This afternoon I made a peach crumble -- just the peaches, some corn starch for body, and then a topping of oatmeal, brown sugar, a little flour, cinnamon and butter. Baked at 350 for 45 min and then under the broiler for about 2 min to crisp up the top. I didn't even wait for it to cool -- I scooped some out into a bowl and put a bit of cream over it. yum, no I mean YUM! Thanks for reading my little story -- it isn't much, the world is still turning, the sun still rises in the east but year old frozen peaches are still good!

(20,234 posts)I have some pears in my freezer from last year and I've been afraid to defrost them. Not sure if I'm going to do a cobbler (seems weird with pears) or fruit leather with them, but I hope I have as much success as you!

(2,682 posts)was that the peaches didn't get freezer-burn. If your pears aren't freezer-burned, you can probably use them.

(912 posts)I have a tradition that I don't eat any canned peaches until the first day it snows, on that day we have peach cobbler. Now you have me wishing for snow!

I didn't buy a lot of peaches this year even though I am in the peach state.
