ORLANDO, Fla. (WJZ) — A college lacrosse player from Maryland died suddenly Monday in Florida.

According to Winter Park Police, Will Hauver, 22, was found Monday afternoon in an off-campus apartment suffering from an unknown medical condition, the Associated Press reports. Hauver was taken to the hospital, but later died.

Sgt. Frank Cowart told the AP Tuesday that foul play was not suspected and that an investigation is ongoing.

According to Hauver’s mother, he died from complications of the flu.

Lyndall Hauver told WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun that her son was feeling sick on Sunday and was found unresponsive the next day.

Before the cluster of cases here that led to the discovery of hantavirus carried by rodents, we lost a coworker who went home with the flu and was found dead the next day when he didn't call in or show up. Years later, his tissue samples were tested and hantavirus was confirmed.

When the flu kills this quickly, hantavirus should always be suspected. The strains this year just weren't that virulent.
