I'm fairly certain the change will not be completed in my lifetime, but I'm very proud to see that the change has begun.

(13,431 posts)So many people in that age range have matured while knowing LGBT people or having many LGBT friends. Their widespread embrace of equality and simultaneous rejection of homophobia is truly a wonder to behold. The vast difference in the life experience of the average 20 year old today compared to the life experience 30 years ago of the average 20 year old is almost a day vs. night comparison regarding LGBT issues.
While we clearly have too many people in power who are clinging to the past and making the present so miserable for so many people, the future certainly appears brighter and better.

(29,503 posts)immediately, which is that religion - traditionally homophobic, once even prescribing the execution of gay people, but less so as parishioners increasingly demand less hatred as part of official church dogma - is probably an influence of diminished power relative to all the new social media that have emerged over the last 20 years. Much of that media is unconstrained by both informal and formal rules and mores, and so it's been an effective tool in the hands of those who are members of groups fighting oppressive social orders, i.e., as in Egypt.
