Homophobes say homosexuals made a lifestyle choice. So did they make a choice to be only straight while fearing or repressing their homosexual side with homophobia? I'm straight and have never felt I had a choice.

(6,335 posts)Which is even more curious. That some bisexuals may be repressing it by being homophobic and fearful of their gay tendencies.

(20,885 posts)I mean, have you considered this is a case of 'proof by tautology?'

(6,036 posts)You give them way too much credit implying that many homophobes actually applied critical thinking skills. Blinded by their hatred of anyone who is not exactly like they are. They seize upon any convenient purported reasoning to justify their hatred.

(6,335 posts)Next time somebody says its a choice I'll ask them, 'If being straight for you is a choice then, why was it never a choice for me?'

(18,421 posts)There was a study done several years ago now that showed that homophobic people were more LIKELY to be non-straight and ashamed of themselves. However, it's never a certainty. They may just be idiots.

Homophobic Men Most Aroused by Gay Male Porn
Homophobia is associated with sexual excitement by male-on-male sex.
Jun 09, 2011
Even a man who thought that women want to have sex with their fathers, and that women spend much of their lives distraught over their lack of a penis, is right sometimes. This person, the legend that is Sigmund Freud, theorized that people often have the most hateful and negative attitudes towards things they secretly crave, but feel that they shouldn't have.
If Freud is right, then perhaps men who are the most opposed to male homosexuality have particularly strong homosexual urges for other men.
One study (link is external) asked heterosexal men how comfortable and anxious they are around gay men. Based on these scores, they then divided these men into two groups: men that are homophobic, and men who are not. These men were then shown three, four-minute videos. One video depicted straight sex, one depicted lesbian sex and one depicted gay male sex. While this was happening, a device was attached to each participant's penis. This device (link is external) has been found to be triggered by sexual arousal, but not other types of arousal (such as nervousness, or fear - arousal often has a very different meaning in psychology than in popular usage).
When viewing lesbian sex and straight sex, both the homophobic and the non-homophobic men showed increased penis circumference. For gay male sex, however, only the homophobic men showed heightened penis arousal.
Heterosexual men with the most anti-gay attitudes, when asked, reported not being sexually aroused by gay male sex videos. But, their penises reported otherwise.
Homophobic men were the most sexually aroused by gay male sex acts.

(2,367 posts)as a lesbian oriented transsexual woman, I watch several types of porn and I'll admit I have a pretty disgusting taste in it. lol
I watch
Man on woman (or woman on man?) porn, ie hetero porn.
Man on trans porn
Trans on trans porn
Woman on woman porn
Pretty much the only type I don't watch is man on man porn
That said, I can comfortably say I have no interest in dating a man nor do I have any attraction to men whatsoever.
So one person's interest in porn I would say is not necessarily indicative of their attraction - of course with two large groups it is a valid study. One homophobic gay getting hard at gay porn does not mean he specifically is gay or bi... but homophobic guys as a whole getting more likely to get hard at gay porn than non homophobic guys, yeah I'd say there are a ton of closeted gay haters

(4,261 posts)But others are not. The whole "repressed" thing strikes me as a way for the hetero community to deny that "They" could be as hideous and hateful as that.

(2,367 posts)option a being repressed homomsexuality/bisexuality
option b being just hate
option c being OTHER sexually (or nonsexually) repressed issues like weird fetishes, sexual shame, jealousy of gay relative or friend's successes, jealousy of being able to even have sex with a partner at all, etc etc etc.

(67,112 posts)weird, those constantly obsessed with others sexual preferences. I think many other are starting to question WTF is with them.

I believe that anyone who is born gay, transsexual, or transgender can try to force themselves be *straight*, but if they do, they will become mentally and/or emotionally and/or psychologically ill to some degree.
Living a lie is never healthy.

(13,324 posts)I know you mean well, but at worst the "homophobes are secretly gay/bisexual" meme can be used to take the blame for homophobia off of straight folks (where it mostly belongs) and put it onto gays and bisexuals.
Oftentimes the "it's a choice" stance is just pure ignorance and/or an excuse to hate.
shee, whodathunkI'dhavetoexplainit.

(29,503 posts)And that they strike out at openly gay and bisexual men for a number of reasons, two of which are they feel it's not fair that gay men get to be free when homophobes have to remain enslaved, and when they see openly gay men who they find attractive, it arouses them, which scares them.
That said, I don't give a diddly squat what motivates them; I refuse to associate myself with homophobes regardless of why such people feel that way. They are not part of my life.
