World-Herald editorial: Speech student shows stuff of champ

Last week, Michael Barth displayed his talent in winning the state high school speech contest with his poetry presentation. This week, the champion from Gordon-Rushville High displayed much more.

The high school senior stood up for what he believes.

He stood up to adults who — after giving him a first-place gold medal and asking him to join their “Best of the Best” telecast — suddenly decided that his reciting poetry about gender identity wasn’t appropriate. He couldn’t join other student- champions in the television broadcast unless he chose a different poem.

This troubling decision by the Nebraska School Activities Association came after Barth had performed the material at contests throughout the year; after judges at the state contest not only didn’t find the content out of bounds but named Barth the best in Class C-1; and after he was invited to take part in the broadcast.
