I do alot of online gaming

like Left 4 Dead, Star Trek online, Battlestar online, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit type games and I have been with a Fleet/Clan now for about 5 years great people, but this new person that joined keeps using the word faggot alot referring to enemy players. I told the leader of the group to ask him not to use that slur cause I find it mean, yes my leader knows I'm gay, and he said to me oh just ignore it it's only a game. I said the game might be but the word isn't. So he asked him not to use it and he said why do we have one in the Fleet? and the chat room went silent for a bit none of the 6 said anything at that point. he still uses it but not as much. I don't want to leave my group and I was told not to let him know I am gay so how should I handle this politely?

It's an ugly word to throw around and it shouldn't be used by anyone. It wouldn't be cool to use it if you were straight, either.

I have been in my group for years and this is a noob if I put him in his place about it and the other members get mad about me doing it then that would be their problem then.

a couple of my friends once about their remarks. It was all excuses, excuses, excuses and nothing changed. From what limited interaction I've had through consoles, and through my own interaction through other games, I'm beginning to think that's the way it's going to be. Cowards won't change, because online nothing will happen to them.

However, we're always looking for safe spaces, for strength. If someone speaks out against a negative behavior, I think in this context it's more so someone like us can see and feel that they're not alone. Next time in chat you should answer his question about why an LGBTer is in y'all's group. Either your group realizes he's not an asset and kicks him out, or you realize you're not as attached to the people you've played half a decade with as you thought you were, giving you an incentive to start your own group with people in the same boat.

And, of course, ruining his day by pwning him wherever he goes is perfectly acceptable.

You have every right to be comfortable as anyone else. They would all be just as comfortable if the word wasn't used. They need to get over it and grow up. You are right.

Is this excrementaly juvenile person worth it to them that they would lose an established player over their foul mouth? I guess after 5 years you have a lot invested in them, but loyalty goes two ways, if they are not loyal to you maybe it's time to shop around.

Make it clear that it's this cretin's foul mouth or you in private to the other players. Maybe they don't know how to handle it and are looking for direction. Don't go for them or me, just the word. If this moron doesn't like it they can go elsewhere. There are plenty more players where they come from.

If your "friends" don't support you then it's clear that it is not a safe environment for you and I would consider leaving them for a more conducive environment.

It is all about you and how safe you feel. I have quit gaming for various reasons, but I have left games and guilds over the word issue and casual homophobia. It's just not worth the agro for me.

It's your call in the end and you have to follow your own way. We will be here to help if you want.

I left before Perfect world? took over. Your post has made me think about gaming again. Darn you Goalie, Darn you to Heck .
I would have to start out as a newbie again as I have forgotten my account details and changed emails several times since then.
Would it be worth it to try again?

And I can't stay in a guild where that kind of language is allowed. Eve was really bad with the hyper-aggressive guys. I heard LoL is much the same.

I'm currently checking out EQ2 again. I was looking at STO the other day but PWE also puts me off so I'm wondering the same thing. Not that EQ2 isn't a cash-grab (there's a shopping cart button on the UI... *cry*).

Hmmm EQ2 might check it out again. EQNext or EQ3 or whatever it's called may still be in beta for all I know, but it is supposed to turn up soonTM. Don't know if it's for me though, the combat system sounded a bit like GW2 which left me cold, but the class system reminds me somewhat of Star Wars Galaxies... a little bit.

Decisions, decisions.
