‘An extreme rightwing regime behaving in the most criminal fashion and defying the world

http://mondoweiss.net/2014/08/rightwing-unscrupulously-holocaust.html

A lot of folks have seen this, according to Youtube. It’s the first truly great speech I’ve seen from a western politician decrying Israeli impunity. David Norris is an Irish senator. Note that he says that he had a home in Israel or Palestine; he had a longtime relationship with Ezra Nawi, the great Israeli activist. Some highlights:

It changed from a leftwing socially directed country to an extreme rightwing regime that is behaving in the most criminal fashion and defying the world and unscrupulously using the Holocaust to justify what they’re doing and it’s time that rag was torn away from them.

Israel is afraid of Palestinian unity. That’s what this is all about. It has nothing to do with [the three murdered teens]…

My Jewish and my pro-Israel friends say to me sometimes, How would you fare as a gay man in any of these–? I know exactly how I’d fare. It doesn’t mean that it is correct to deny people the right to choose their own government. What self-respecting or sane people would allow their enemies to choose their government for them?

Hamas, the militant and political group in the Palestinian Territories have said that they win the Palestinian Authority Parliamentary election, they would ban men and women dancing together and will strip gay men and women of the few rights they have in the territory that they have at present.
Dr Mahmoud Zahar (pictured), the groups leader in Gaza, in an article on an Arabic website condemned the rights that gays have in Israel and made it clear that he thinks that gays are perverts. “Are these the laws for which the Palestinian street is waiting? For us to give rights to homosexuals and to lesbians, a minority of perverts and the mentally and morally sick?”

Gay marriage is recognized but can not be performed due to religious hold on marriage including heterosexual civil marriage but this will change.

Hamas are in the company of Russia , Uganda , Iran , Zimbabwe and other sick backward regressive gay hating sick right wing homophobic regimes.

There was a parade held in Tel Aviv those years.
So, do you have a point? Beyond demonstrating that your preconceived notions regarding gay rights in Israel were incorrect, obviously.

Ignoring your offensive comment about the "gay ghetto" you are reinforcing my point. It's not remarkable for a secular, liberal democracy such as Israel to hold a gay pride parade in its most populous, cosmopolitan city. In fact it's to be expected. The fact that Israel also held several parades in their most fractious, religiously conservative city further reinforces this point: that a stark difference exists between the rights afforded to minority groups in Israel as opposed to the surrounding states. That there's nothing remarkable about Israel's practice of human and civil rights at all. It's to be expected in fact.

No one's asking anyone to move to an anti-gay country, or not to fight for the rights of gay people everywhere.

The question here is whether we should support an occupying force bombing and economically strangling all of the people in any country, whether that country is anti-gay or not. I'm sure people here would not like to see sections of Uganda indiscriminately leveled (as has happened with neighborhoods in Gaza). And statistically speaking, 5 to 10 percent of the IDF's victims are gay Palestinians.

It's great that Tel Aviv can have a vibrant Pride parade, what does that have to do with bombing Gaza? Israel is not bombing Gaza in order to impose gay rights on the Palestinians there. It's not bombing Gaza because Hamas is anti-gay. It's claiming self-defense, disingenuously. So this argument is a red herring.

The question for Americans, always, should be a simple one: Do we as taxpayers continue funding military and other support for the Israeli state? Before that, most other questions are, practically speaking, distractions.

with your response, perhaps true (with regard to Hamas) but nevertheless entirely irrelevant to the issue of the Israeli aggression and war crimes against Palestinians (killing straight and gay ones in equal proportion, one presumes).

Or wait, are you advocating that like Israel in Gaza, someone powerful should relentlessly bomb the civilian populations of "Russia, Uganda, Iran, Zimbabwe etc" because their regimes are "virulent gay hating" and "there's no pass for sick gay haters"?

There's probably a reason your post makes no sense, like pinkwashing overall makes no sense. Because its only function is to use an injustice to distract from an entirely unrelated atrocity.

Because if Gays weren't forced to leave or disposed of by Hamas or jailed or fled Gaza.

My Gay guide to the world has 75 pages on Israel, 55 on Canada, 60 on Spain 85 on the USA and 1 sentence on Gaza and Uganda.

Because I thought the issue here was Israel's treatment of Gaza. If that's justified by Hamas's treatment of gays, as you're implying, do you also support bombing civilian targets in Uganda on the basis of its treatment of gay people? Also, Russia, Iran, Zimbabwe, etc.?
