PM Netanyahu: In the state of Israel, we are not prepared to tolerate racism; neither are we prepared to tolerate the combination of racism and violence

Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today (Tuesday, 21 August 2012), signed a document to encourage the absorption and integration of Ethiopian Jews in Israeli society and economy, and to prevent discrimination and racism.

At the signing, the Prime Minister condemned the acts of violence and racism that occurred over the weekend and said:

"In the state of Israel, we are not prepared to tolerate racism; neither are we prepared to tolerate the combination of racism and violence. I have just spoken with Hadassah Medical Organization Director General Prof. Ehud Kokia. I asked him about how the victims of this terrible incident in Jerusalem are doing.

The unfortunate fact is that Israel is founded on the principle of racism, Israel's history is defined by racism, and Israel's own mainstream politicians endorse and encourage racism, whether it's the seething anti-Arab positions of Avigdor Lieberman, or the pro-riot, anti-African attitudes of Danny Danon, Miri Regev and Michael Ben-Ari. The Beta Israel have been dealing with this structural racism in Israel since they came in.

It's going to take a lot more than a halfhearted statement by Netanyahu to address the issue of racism in Israel. especially given that Netanyahu condemning racism against the Beta Israel is a lot like David Duke condemning racism against the Irish.
