Israel/Palestine
Related: About this forumLatin American diplomats: We can be doing more to pressure Israel
Speaking at a one-day conference in London, Latin American diplomats call for tougher policies, including sanctions and boycotts, against Israel for its polices of apartheid.
A year after Israel faced widespread censure from Latin America over its attack on the Gaza Strip, diplomats from the region have warned that a further deterioration in relations could be on the cards.
Speaking at a conference in London on Saturday, Ecuadors Minister of Culture Guillaume Long warned that should there be a repeat of the 2014 war, which he described as a genocide, then Israel can expect similar, or even more serious, steps from other Latin American governments.
---
In his address, Long noted that while Latin American solidarity with Palestine has a long history on the political Left, what is new is that this Left is now in power in many countries across the region. The Left remembers, Long pointed out, the historical role Israel has played in Latin America, with its arms sales and support for dictatorships and right-wing paramilitary groups.
This is BDS. It is a growing movement of people, organizations and countries who are fed up with the Israeli lifestyle of coloniation, apartheid, human rights abuses and outright land theft in the name of zionism.
And those right wingers who have hijacked zionism also wishto discredit the growing movement against them bydeclaring them anti-zionists and anti-Semites.
Yes, there will be some pretend Democrats and progressives, right wingers in sheeps clothing, that will howl about it notbeing fair or that BDS is full of bigots, but what they really are attempting to do is silence a waking giant.
Geuss what? It won't work, and the world is making that point crystal clear.
If zionism = land theft, illegal colonization, human rights abuses, apartheid and murder then I am against zionism.
That's the message that the world is sending as well, and the world is not happy to say the least.
BDS.

(58,724 posts)Would you believe me if I told you that while president Rafael Correa was singing Hasta siempre, comandante with a band in the main square in central Quito last Thursday night just one block away riot police were tear-gassing and clubbing Ecuadorian citizens? Or that elsewhere in Ecuador the police have been reported to be specifically targeting female protestors intimate parts?
Ecuador is currently in turmoil. Thousands of people are protesting proposed constitutional amendments, the expansion of the oil frontier, mining projects, changes to water and education policy, labour laws and pensions, a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU), and increasing repression of freedom of speech, among other things. The governments response? To send the police and military with batons and tear-gas to beat citizens, make arbitrary arrests, raid homes and even some people believe to take advantage of volcanic eruptions by declaring a nationwide State of Exception.
The protests have taken different forms. Indigenous people marched for 10 days from the Zamora Chinchipe province in the Amazon to Quito, 1,000s and 1,000s of people gathered in the capital last week, and another march involving approximately 2,000 people was held there on Monday. In addition, a series of demonstrations and road-blocks have sprung up elsewhere in the country.
Ive never seen anything like it before, Patricia Gualinga, a Kichwa leader from the Amazon, told the Guardian, talking about the violence that broke out in Quitos narrow streets last week. Total brutality. They were using motor-bikes, horses and tear-gas bombs. You cant imagine what its like if you didnt see it.

No surprise that Ecuador would want to deflect attention away from their own repression.

(45,850 posts)and Bernie Sanders hasn't sad much about if anything about BDS, that would be Hillary's thing helped by the millions pledged to her campaign by Haim Saban not to mention the millions he pumped into the Clinton foundation
In Los Angeles, a Clinton fundraising dinner will be held by Cheryl and Haim Saban, an entertainment mogul who created the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The billionaire couple, through their family foundation, donated between $10 million and $25 million to the Clinton Foundation, making the couple among the philanthropy's biggest benefactors. Haim Saban frequently invites the former first lady to his annual foreign policy meetings in Washington.

Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: J see nothing wrong with this post.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Rude for the sake of it, when post 12 doesn't offer any rebuttal. This poster's seem point seems to "my inherent superiority trumps any argument you make." It's yet another case of using personal attacks because someone can't bother to think of an actual argument.

(4,159 posts)"One way or another", officials in the Israeli banking system say, "it's necessary to understand what will happen here on the day that it will be decided to to 'credit mark'. When you mark products it can harm part of the market here and there, but when they mark each credit that the bank gives beyond the Green Line [1967 line] and boycott that bank, the meaning of it is a property confiscation warrant on all the banks. The European banking and credit system is inextricably connected to the Israeli economy, no European bank will accompany projects in Israel, it will not be possible to receive credit in Europe and there is nothing we would be able to do about it".
BTW ...........breaking news over here :
EU envoy warns of more steps against Israeli settlements
Associated Press
Published: 08.27.15, 14:20 / Israel News
The European Union's outgoing envoy to the Palestinian territories says the 28-nation bloc is moving forward with measures against Jewish West Bank settlements.
The envoy, John Gatt-Rutter, did not provide a timeframe. But his remarks to reporters Thursday underline European discontent with Israel's continued expansion of settlements in territory that Palestinians want for a future state.

Middle East Monitor is obviously a propaganda site (not a news site) allied with the BDS movement.
Hopefully it will be treated accordingly from now on.
