Good news: The chances of your home becoming beachfront property in the next 80 years may have just gone up 200%! That's also the bad news.
A renowned team of climatologists just published a new study about sea level rise in the science journal Nature. By factoring in the frightening increase in the rate of melting ice from Antarctica and Greenland, they calculated a global sea level rise of more than six feet by the end of the century more than twice as much as previously predicted.
In Seattle, for example, it won't just be the rain that makes it wet...

Still, it beats the hell out of finally buying that beachfront McMansion on a storm track. If the hurricanes don't get you, the nor'easters will.

(731 posts)as a teenager I would go down there(I lived even closer then) when a nor'easter would come in. Sept. -December is weaker , Feb.-April are magnificent storms. little to no lightning. When there was it would finger out over the water . It would light it up like fire works. The bay was dark and choppy with no reflection so it was a brilliant white on black. There was wind that could take your breath away. It came in wide corridors , it would just engulf someone. You couldn't hear anyone if they spoke. It was a world onto itself. We would joke that Gods wrath would come in off the bay. It was awe inspiring. My mother probably would have beat me senseless if she knew what I had been up to. Even now when a big one comes in there is little part of me that wants to go down there and feel everything. That's why giving up the ocean is so hard for so many. I will when the time comes

Ostriches with their heads in the sand, do not realize the inertia of people will have to be in deep dodo before they actually move.
I expect a lot of death and destruction and think this is indeed an extinction event that could be avoided but humans are just not smart enough.

(11,830 posts)there are quite a few scientists that are saying we are LIVING in the Sixth Extinction - that should make folks sit up and take notice.

(19,938 posts)People forget, sea level rise is only one concern here.
If the seas are no longer producing as much food
if land crops are difficult to bring to harvest
flooded coastal cities are a minor inconvenience.

(731 posts)Where I'm at we could withstand about a 10 meter rise and take a storm. I was raised to move when the water takes over. you don't rebuild you give it back to the ocean. which is a good thing thing since it's not asking anyones permission. I will say That moving out of the state is easier said then done . I'll do what needs to be done but it's a hell of alot more than snapping fingers and just doing it

> you don't rebuild you give it back to the ocean
i.e., don't keep throwing money at the problem, learn from it instead.
