Appears to be a lot of interest from corporations.

On Tesla's quarterly earnings call, CEO Elon Musk announced "crazy off the hook" demand for its just-announced Powerwall battery product. He said over 38,000 reservations have been received, which should take up the expected production through mid-2016, and demand is high enough to account for all of the Gigafactory's production if they devoted it just to stationary batteries. That includes some 2,500 companies that are interested in the Powerpack (with orders averaging around 10 units each), and Musk said he estimates that commercial interest in Tesla Energy will account for 5-10 more megawatt hours than residential. To clear up one question about the Powerwall, he mentioned that while it doesn't have a DC-to-AC inverter included, it does have a DC-to-DC unit built in.

(1,527 posts)There are not even any details on how to hook the thing up or what other equipment you would need to make it do anything. It is like less than a third of any kind of usable power system, but people are going crazy over it like its the new iPhone.
Wow.

(1,091 posts)Musk said most of the demand is from industrial users.
What I know is that for small and medium size manufacturers a large portion of their monthly bills are demand charges. The utilities come up with a baseline amount of usage and then anything over that is subject to the 'demand charge'. So every time a large piece of equipment starts up - they get hit with a surcharge on their bill. I've seen bills from medium sized Machine Shops where the demand charge is close to 30% of their bill. If batteries can be used to reduce these surcharges then they could pay for themselves in no time.
