Portland and the District Council of Trade Unions, a coalition representing more than 1,600 city workers across seven unions, announced a tentative agreement Wednesday on a new four-year contract.

It isn't a final deal. The City Council must also approve the contract as well as the union members.

But as the Portland Public Schools and the Portland Association of Teachers continue to struggle to find a compromise on a labor agreement, city officials say a tentative deal on its largest labor agreement is a welcome thing.

The news comes just a week after the city declared an impasse in contract negotiations, which had been ongoing for the past 11 months.
