- The Terra do Meio Ecological Station spans 3.37 million hectares (8.33 million acres) in the Brazilian Amazonian state of Pará and is home to hundreds of wildlife species, including many threatened with extinction.
- Despite its protected status, Terra do Meio has come under growing pressure, with data showing deforestation doubling in 2022, reaching 4,300 hectares (nearly 11,000 acres).
- Environmentalists say the destruction within Terra do Meio is being driven by illegal loggers, miners and land speculators and they fear a new road slicing through the reserve could usher in more destruction.
- Advocates are placing their hopes in Brazils new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has promised to crack down on invasions into protected reserves and rein in sky-high deforestation rates.
XINGU RIVER, Brazil Deep in the Brazilian Amazon, our motorboat slides past an emerald canopy of rainforest, cascading down to the banks of the Xingu River. (19 posts)Is this happening under Lula's administration?

(160,530 posts)He raged against the indigenous people for decades before slithering into the Presidency. He has publicly stated he envies the way the United States was able to slaughter the vast majority of the Native Americans from the time the European settlers stomped off their boats to plunder, maim, enslave, torture, and massacre absolutely everyone they didn't want on the land they stole.
Lula will be deeply engaged on returning the progress he made during his earlier time in office, which lifted millions of Portuguese citizens out of despair and hopeless deprivation. He's working to remove the illegal loggers, miners, and ranchers who set fires to the forest to burn off the plant life and animal life in order to steal the land and convert it to ranch land, or farmland. It's going to take beyond heroic efforts and stamina from a lot of people. The murderous racist criminal capitalists in Brazil have been operating without any restraints almost all the time until Lula was elected. From the first.
Every day will be precious. He's just getting started.
