Paraguay President Fernando Lugo gets cancer all-clear

Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo has made a full recovery from cancer, doctors treating him in Brazil say.

Follow-up tests confirmed that his lymphatic cancer was in "complete remission", the Syrian-Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo said.

Mr Lugo, 60, was visited by the former Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who is being treated for throat cancer at the same hospital.

Mr Lugo was diagnosed with cancer in August 2010 and had several chemotherapy sessions in the Sao Paulo hospital.

Of the four leftist presidents in LatAm diagnosed with cancer or a suspicious tumor requiring surgery (Chavez/president of Venezuela, Fernandez-Kirchner/president Argentina, Lugo/president of Paraguay, Rousseff/current president of Brazil and da Silva, former president of Brazil), four are in remission (or, in Fernandez-Kirchner's case, was found not to have cancer). Lula da Silva remains the question mark. Will he recover?

I thought that Fernando Lugo (Paraguay) had a fatal form of cancer. It's great news that he did not and that he is in remission. His election in Paraguay was a turning point for Paraguay and for the region. He won Paraguay's presidency after some 60 years of rightwing, single party rule, including a heinous dictatorship. His inauguration was a moment of big celebration for all of these new leftist leaders for it brought Paraguay, of all countries, into the 21st century and into alliance with the region-wide leftist movement for Latin American sovereignty, democracy and social justice.

Movements of this magnitude and historical importance are created by the People--the "grass roots"--not by individual leaders. Never more true than with this leftist movement. But such movements also require great leaders to implement the desires of the People. Latin America has been especially blest, as leftist leader after leftist leader has emerged to fulfill that role. It's weird that so many of them have been hit with cancer but we can only imagine the stress that they suffer, carrying CIA and fascist bull's eye targets on their backs, every minute of every day. That much stress can certainly impair your immune system.

he needs to say healthy to fight the leftist rebels he faces, which I have noticed that you have never said anything about.
