Leader of Brazil's Rousseff Impeachment (Cunha) Resigns From Top Job

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSJULY 7, 2016, 4:24 P.M. E.D.T.

RIO DE JANEIRO — The man who led efforts to impeach suspended President Dilma Rousseff resigned as speaker of Brazil's lower house of congress Thursday, but kept the legislative seat that could help shield him from corruption charges.

Brazil's top court already had suspended Eduardo Cunha from his duties as speaker over allegations of obstructing justice and corruption, including holding Swiss bank accounts worth millions of dollars from purported bribes.

Cunha kicked off impeachment proceedings against Rousseff in December, accusing her of violating fiscal laws to hide problems in the government's finances. Rousseff denies that.

Cunha's allies have suggested that resigning the speakership would be his best chance to survive a full vote by the House of Deputies that could strip him of his congressional seat and thereby lift legal protections enjoyed by lawmakers.

under dictatorships, were set up so that when the dictatorships stepped down, the fascist officials could STILL go ahead a stay in Congress and beat prison. Remember that Pinochet was able to pull that one, in Chile, before things got too hot, and he took off for England, and got asylum there with Margaret Thatcher's indulgence?

Then, like almost ALL of them do, he was said to have died during the time they were arranging to try him.

When Brazil gets its next progressive President back, and some Progressive support in their legislature, they should consider removing that trap door which drops future fascists into Congress when they are on track for prison.

Full blast BOOOOOOOO for Eduardo Cunha. #### you, "Ed."

Some people have compared Cunha to Kevin Spacey's character on "House of Cards." [/center]
