Protests in Brazil: Photographer beaten up for looking like Lula

Beto Novaes, photographer of the newspaper "Estado de Minas", was beaten up while covering the protests held this Sunday on Liberdade Square.

Because of his physical similarity to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Beto is frequently approached by people asking to take photos with him. During the protests this Sunday, a woman from Brasilia asked to take a picture with him. It was when a group of four young men surrounded him.

"They started to push me, kicked my thigh and told me to leave", said Beto. Even though he was using press identification, the aggressors kept on insulting him until he was forced to leave the place.

"They told me I wasn't working, that I had gone to the protest dressing up like Lula". The photographer also said it was the first time he has gone through this kind of situation in 30 years of photojournalism.

Who could be so poorly raised as to lay hands on someone pretending they believe he is a former leftist President? If they DID believe he was the former President, that's stupid, and nasty, too.

The idle rich are far too idle in Brazil, and other places, if they have so much time to meet in the streets to try to gather up enthusiasm for overthrowing the elected President of the people.

They are probably trying to get people to fight with them, so it can get a lot of coverage and they can use it as the beginning of a revolution once the public starts getting angry. They definitely wouldn't be too noble to hire snipers to murder a few easily dispensable creeps on their side, in order to make it look as if the people they hate are shooting at them. We've certainly seen that before, setting a phony situation in order to try to exploit it for a rebellion.
