SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Democratic members of the California Assembly are heading to Cuba for an agricultural trade mission as the U.S. considers easing economic restrictions against the island nation.
Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins on Thursday announced she'll lead the five-day trip with eight other Democrats while the Legislature is in spring recess next week. A lobbyist who leads trade missions to Cuba is also attending.
The federal government is considering re-establishing diplomatic and economic ties with Cuba. Atkins says California lawmakers want to build relationships with Cuban officials to promote business such as telecommunications, construction and banking.
The trip's focus is on agriculture, and ranchers and farmers will join lawmakers who have an interest in agriculture.
