Venezuela aims to eliminate violence from TV

http://english.cntv.cn/20140121/104216.shtml

CARACAS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Venezuelan government urged television channel owners and cable operators Monday to reform their programs and help improve content.

Vice President Jorge Arreaza said at a meeting that mass media should assume responsibility for educating the people and spearhead efforts to eliminate violence from TV.

Media representatives agreed at the meeting to present their proposals to authorities by Jan. 27 on adjusting their content, which must also be in accordance with the law on social responsibility in radio and TV.

Arreaza said the move was aimed at building "a society of values and peace."

3. I think shutting down commercial TV would be a great step in that direction.

It is a fountain of debased values, soft-core pornography, and violence.

The programming slate could go over communism failures, abuses of human rights by dictatorships such as Cuba's, economic indicators, disclosure of crime statistics, investigative reports showing hospital and jail conditions, and corruption cases.

On the entertainment front I would show anti communist films, including 1984 and Animal Farm.

What do you think?

As in, it's not gonna do shit at all. Don't know how you can be so naive about the idea of eliminating violent programming from TV is gonna help. Most developed countries in the world show programming just as violent and charged with sex, if not moreso, and they don't seem to have a violence problem in their society. Maybe what this government should do is actually go after the real causes of violent crime, such as high levels of impunity and the complete lack of gun control.

It's their indirect way of keeping the population locked up in fear. Hence why I think no real action will ever be taken by Maduro and his ilk to tackle the problem. Hell, just look at the prisons. Anybody can strike a deal with a warden there and do whatever they want. They even throw parties in there that people from outside can go to.

The Chavistas have the guns and are the ones committing the crimes. One could say the regime consists of a huge grouping of mafias mixed in with Cuban g2 agents.
