Colorado counties face money issues with federal-land payment cut

DENVER - County commissioners across Colorado are anxiously waiting to see if Congress will approve more than $30 million owed for payment in-lieu of taxes (PILT) on federal land.

"I can't think of another year when there has been nothing passed," said Chip Taylor, executive director of Colorado Counties, Inc. "There are several small rural counties that are going to have to look really seriously about what they are funding."

Taylor said the payments from the federal government to counties that have federally owned - and subsequently untaxed - land in their jurisdiction are intended to help support that property.

Taylor said likely the first things to be cut will be wildfire services, forestry and search and rescue programs.
