I have another question concerning my cable internet connection

Last edited Tue Apr 10, 2012, 03:40 PM - Edit history (2)

I decided I'd start a new thread because I now have another question but first let me tell you what I did. Last summer I bought a linksys wireless router (wrt54g ver 2) at a garage sale for a couple bucks. I am using it so I can use wireless as the modem the cable company provided for me is a wired only modem and my wired connection doesn't work. I haven't got it to work yet anywho. I think it may be a driver problem and I don't know how to correct that so thats where I need some help now.
My question is how do I get my wired connection to work in ubuntu 10.10 in case I ever think I need to use a wired connection instead of a wireless one
My computer is a dell dimension 4700. I know, I know, friends don't let friends buy a dell but when I bought this in '91 I didn't know that and other than this it has been bullet proof, so far. Knock on wood.

Thanks all, I appreciate the help
peace

Found out what the problem was, my board was fried so rather than spend a couple three hundred bucks upgrading this 10 year old computer the money would be better spent on a new one so I bought an amd quad core A6 3.2 with 8 gig of ram and one 1T
harddrive. Have no Idea as to why, its not like I need it or anything. I guess its like with fast cars, fast girls/boys whichever, just gotta have it. I can scoot right along with the best of them now. This thing is blindingly fast using ubuntu compared to window7 it came with.
At first trying to play around with windows it was like window was so slow, just limping along compared to my 10 year old old computer running ubuntu 10.10. I got up early and made the systems disk and emergency start up of the install of windows and then wiped it clean. Ubuntu rules

Just to rule out the easy stuff - When you connect two, do you get a link light of some sort on the router and/or the pc? The pc light (if it has one) will be on the back by the ethernet socket)

(Cause if it's just a duff cable, this will be easy. )

Edit: Second thing is go to System > Administration > Network tools, select "Eth0" as the network device (if you can) and note the hardware address on the left - this should let us know your card is responding and who made it.

The HW address will be some gibberish like 08:00:27:b5:ed:cb

The light comes on but it takes about 15 minutes to show my homepage.

After I posted this question and your reply I remembered that what my problem is is probably due to my board being trashed. I'd forgotten that a couple years ago lightning struck close by and knocked out my modem and when they replaced it they upgraded to a wireless one so I went to wireless so I wouldn't have a wired connection to my computer from the dsl line. I didn't realize that my board was fried because my computer didn't have a wireless card and I had to put one in so I didn't try my wired connection at that time, I was just happy that it didn't take out my computer, totally. The cable company put in a wired modem and that was when I noticed the problem. computer is fine, settings are correct, my problem I believe now is due to that lightning strike trashing my wired connection card.
Thanks for the help because it helped jar my memory to see the problem lies with my computer afterall.

I think it might be time for me to buy a new computer as this one is getting pretty long of tooth.
Peace
Have a great Easter.

Or disable it. Sounds like you might have a routing problem, and in any case you want it OFF.

...and I'm glad you thought of it, as "struck by lightning" is a long way down the checklist.
Forking out for new a box sounds like a sane plan, but give me a nudge if you want to revisit it...

Happy Easter to you and yours!

I want to stay wireless anyway so as long as this linksys wireless router works I'll use it. I have my doubts as to being able to find a card that will work on this motherboard and if I had to buy it from dell I'd be better off putting the money towards a new box so the new computer is definitely on the list. All I'll have to buy is the cpu and you can get a pretty good one for a good price that way, or I hope anyway.
