If so, check the settings in that program to see how to turn it off.

Windows has its own virtual keyboard, which you might have accidentally activated. See here for how to disable it:

Windows XP: http://superuser.com/questions/418753/disabling-the-on-screen-keyboard-in-windows-xp
Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/type-without-keyboard#type-without-keyboard=windows-7
Windows 8: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToDisableTheOnScreenTouchKeyboardInWindows8.aspx

Otherwise, for troubleshooting, can you enter text using your laptop keyboard in any Windows prompt screens - i.e. without opening up any programs?

If this doesn't give you any clues, try starting up in Safe Mode (restart the computer and repeatedly tap F8 while it's booting up) and see whether the problem still occurs and whether your laptop keyboard works at all in any programs.
