Reward at $6,000 in killing of mother turtle at Delavan golf course

Female snapping turtle dies Wednesday after golf club attack
By Ashley Luthern of the Journal Sentinel Updated: 12:22 p.m

The female snapping turtle found beaten on a Delavan golf course died Wednesday, and the reward for information leading to her attacker has now reached $6,000.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, announced Wednesday that it is adding $5,000 to the $1,000 reward offered by the Global Conservation Group of Watertown. "Animal abusers are cowards. They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them," PETA Director Martin Mersereau said in a news release.

The turtle, a female searching for a safe spot for her eggs, appeared to have been beaten with a golf club between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Delbrook Golf Course and had holes in her shell. The turtle was being treated at Pine View Wildlife Rehabiltation and Education Center in Fredonia.

The turtle animal cruelty case isn't the only to have the cash reward grow. Last month, the reward tripled for tips in the case of a decapitated male black bear that was killed while hibernating inside a northern Wisconsin culvert, according to DNR. The cash reward began as $500 offered by the Star Prairie Fish and Game Association and has since grown to $1,750. The bear apparently was illegally shot inside a culvert west of Star Prairie on County Highway H, then dragged elsewhere and decapitated.

The DNR continues to investigate both cases, and anyone with information is asked to call the DNR Hotline at (800) TIP-WDNR or (800) 847-9367.

(Shame really, it's a nice little area. Great old bookstore -with cats!!- there. Very nice local winery near there, too. The name escapes me right now. Shoot.)

caring about one little thing - like a turtle.

Maybe they're just not able to think on such a large ( planet wide) scale. Maybe they feel too impotent to think they can change things on a planet wide scale. But they can save one little turtle. Then another one. They plant some trees/bushes and hang out some bird feeders. Then maybe they adopt a recuse a cat or dot. Contribute to a shelter for animals. Then they start seeing homeless shelters and contribute to that. That first act could create an ever-widening ripple of consciousness of a problem. Trying help on even the smallest scale should be encouraged, appreciated, and applauded.

Maybe all they'll ever do is help that one little turtle. But maybe some impressionable kid/person will see them do it. And their cycle begins.

If we ALL worried about the "one little turtles" I think a whole lot of the rape and pillaging of the planet would decrease significantly. Maybe even disappear. And by all, I mean ALL - everyone on the planet worried about that one little turtle (which is silly of course, some places don't even HAVE turtles/ And some people do give a crap about ANYthing). But I think you get my drift.

What is that old churchy song that was popular when I was but a wee youth - "it only takes a spark, to get a fire gowing". (Let's hope someone doesn't take that part too literally, though!)
