MADISON Covert videos of Democratic activists released in the run-up to last years presidential election showed no violations of Wisconsin laws, a review by the attorney generals office found.
The blunt conclusion is at odds with how Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel initially reacted to the videos by conservative provocateur James OKeefe, who has a track record of mischaracterizing his recordings and was found guilty of a misdemeanor in 2010 over one of his operations.
Schimels office released a statement in October calling the actions by Democrats on the undercover videos apparent violations of the law and saying Schimel was very concerned about them.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Attorney General Brad Schimel says an investigation into secretly recorded videos of a Democratic activist bragging about deploying troublemakers at Donald Trump rallies remains open after initially saying it was closed.
Conservative activist James O'Keefe released footage in October of Wisconsin-based liberal operative Scott Foval appearing to say he arranged for people to incite violence at Trump rallies. Schimel said then the videos suggest election fraud.
The state Justice Department released a memo this week concluding the videos don't present any evidence of wrongdoing, angering O'Keefe. Schimel told the Wisconsin Radio Network on Thursday that the videos offered no leads investigators could pursue and the memo was released because the probe was closed.
Hours later Schimel told WTMJ radio hours later Thursday that the investigation was never closed.
