A Summit Township man is in the Erie County Prison without bond today, awaiting extradition to his native Virginia to face charges in a 1990 homicide.

Robert W. Malick, 46, of the 7600 block of Edinboro Road, was taken into custody by the Pennsylvania State Police on Tuesday morning and was arraigned Tuesday afternoon by Harborcreek Township District Judge Mark Krahe on a fugitive from justice warrant on the underlying charge of murder in the second degree.

Malick is charged in Virginia Beach in the death of Joan Elizabeth Schoppaul, 17, who was reported missing by her parents on Dec. 4, 1990, after she failed to return home after visiting a friend, according to information on the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers Inc. Facebook page.

Schoppaul's body was found the next day in a dumpster behind a supermarket in Virginia Beach. She was wrapped in a blue sleeping bag, according to the Facebook post.

Police have charged a man in the death of a 17-year-old girl whose body was found in a dumpster behind a grocery store on Dec. 5, 1990.

Joan Schoppaul was found wrapped in a blue sleeping bag inside a dumpster behind a former Food Lion at 4740 Baxter Road, police wrote in a news release today.

Schoppaul's parents filed a report with police when she didn't return home from a friend's house the day before.

An autopsy revealed the death as a homicide, but detectives exhausted all leads in the case through the years.
