Covid-19: Least Dangerous County In Metro Area Wash-Arl-Alex-DC-VA-MD-WV

24/7 Wall St., May 9, 2021.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination efforts, the novel coronavirus continues to spread through the United States. To date, 32,167,970 Americans have been infected with the virus -- and 572,987 have died as a result. On a per capita basis, the U.S. has one of the highest known infections rates in the world.
In the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area, which covers all the District of Columbia, and parts of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, a total of 458,179 COVID-19 cases have been reported to date. Adjusted for population, there have been 7,464 reported infections for every 100,000 people in the area -- below the national rate of 9,832 cases per 100,000 people.

> The lower than average per capita COVID-19 infection rate across Washington-Arlington-Alexandria is being driven by one area in particular.

The broader Washington metro area comprises 24 counties or county equivalents -- and of them, Fairfax City, an independent city, in Virginia has the fewest COVID-19 cases per capita.

So far, there have been a total of 551 infections in Fairfax City, or 2,309 for every 100,000 people. Not only does Fairfax City have the lowest per capita infection rate in the Washington metro area, it also has a relatively low per capita fatality rate. There have been a total of 80 coronavirus-related deaths for every 100,000 people in Fairfax City, below the 121 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 across the entire Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area.
