Ted Cruz mocks pro-impeachment Democrats for 'alternative reality'

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Sen. Ted Cruz, courting conservatives at a gathering that has propelled his career for several years, mocked Democrats on Thursday for a fever dream of ousting Donald Trump.

"The Democrats right now are living in an alternative universe," Cruz said in assessing the talk of impeachment. "They are in denial, and they are angry. The anger on the left, I've never seen anything like it."

Democrats who've floated the possibility of impeaching Trump include Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, who may run for Cruz's Senate seat next year, and Rep. Keith Ellison, a leading contender to chair the Democratic National Committee.

While Cruz had nothing nice to say about Trump's adversaries, he offered only indirect praise for the president, who bested him in the 2016 GOP primaries, in a 22-minute appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference at an event complex near the capital.
