More than 400 evacuated after Gaines County well blowout; fix could take days

SEMINOLE — Sound asleep early Tuesday morning, Helena Neufeld received a knock on her door and an order to leave immediately.

“They came and woke us up and told us we had five minutes to get out. We just grabbed our stuff and our babies and left,” the Gaines County woman said, describing an evacuation in response to an oil well blowout near her home.

Neufeld has spent the past two days catching up with her sister, Aganetha Hiebert, and volunteering to help other displaced Gaines Countians.

“These ladies came in asking, ‘What can we do?’ ” said Jim Longstreet of the American Red Cross.
