Victoria County Juvenile detention center's possible closing alarms judges, others

VICTORIA -- A packed courtroom warned county leaders Friday the Victoria juvenile detention center's worth cannot be measured only in dollars and cents.

County Judge Ben Zeller had asked center officials to do just that two weeks ago, causing unnecessary anguish to the 60 employees fulfilling a public service there, District Judge Stephen Williams said Friday at a juvenile board meeting before a standing-room-only crowd.

"Having to house kids in another county like we used to do in the prior century and all the attendant costs that go with that, we think might save the county $100,000," Williams said, "but you're not putting a value on the hassle we used to go through, and you're certainly not putting a value on the safety of the community."

The crowd applauded Williams' comments and almost all of the 10 other speakers who spoke in strong support of the detention center.
