A New Park for a New Downtown Austin: Republic Square To Get Facelift

After two years of public meetings and planning, the Austin Parks Department, Downtown Austin Alliance, and Austin Parks Foundation have arrived at a plan for the future of Republic Square Park. The historic downtown park has sat at 4th and Guadalupe Street for nearly two centuries as the surrounding area has transformed from prairie to metropolis.

The next phase of the park's renovation will include bathroom amenities and a café-style food and beverage concession building. The plan will also create more lighting for nighttime use and flexible spaces for weekend farmers' markets.

The price tag for these renovations comes to $3.8 million. The Austin Parks Foundation, Downtown Austin Alliance, and dollars from November’s bond election are expected to cover the cost.

The master plan is set to go before City Council next month, and if approved, construction is scheduled to begin June of 2015.
