Sand Hills Pipeline to cross area counties

EAGLE FORD SHALE – Those who live out in the country might have had a landman knocking on their door in the past several months asking to lease acreage for a pipeline right of way (ROW).

There is yet another pipeline coming through the area, and this time it is a 720-mile line that runs from Mont Belvieu in Harris County all the way to Ector Couty in West Texas.

The 20-inch line, built by DCP Midstream, will serve as a common carrier line for natural gas liquids (NGLs), said Patrick Brierley, vice president of growth projects for DCP and head of the Sand Hills Pipeline project.

<<snip>>

Construction on this section should start in the summer, and the line will be in operation by Sept. 1, of this year. This portion of the line runs through the heart of the Eagle Ford and passes through multiple counties, including Jackson, Victoria, Goliad, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen, La Salle and more.

It looks like they skirted around the Edwards aquifer so that the environmentalists wouldn't protest.

(aquifers, marshlands, et cetera) really has nothing to do with that route. I did a little searching and found a PDF from DCP Midstream, describing how it will be offering "interconnectivity" with other producers' networks. That is, they are routing that way in order to connect to other gathering-system pipelines and provide a mainline for them.

One reason why I say that the aquifer has nothing to do with this route is because there are hundreds of pipelines in place right now that cross the Edwards and many other aquifers and sensitive areas. Here's a map showing that fact:

I know people tend to focus on pipelines because of the major spills that have occurred, but they're still safer than trucking all that product. And yes, it would be better if we didn't have to use that product at all, but the reality is that society isn't set to go cold turkey off of its oil/gas habit. It has to be a transition. One thing that's nice about pipelines is that if we ever go to a hydrogen and/or fusion economy, they can be re-purposed for such product
