South Carolina likely to pay workers for days off due to Hurricane Matthew

Employees who work for S.C. government, including state agencies and universities, likely will be paid for days of work that they miss because of closures due to Hurricane Matthew.

The S.C. governor is able to authorize leave with pay for state employees who are absent from work because of a state of emergency or hazardous weather conditions, the governor’s office said Wednesday.

Gov. Nikki Haley has used the provision about 10 times to ensure state workers are paid, including for winter weather and last year’s October flooding, according to her office.

State government offices were closed Wednesday in Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Berkeley, Beaufort, Calhoun, Charleston, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Lee, Lexington, Marlboro, Marion, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter and Williamsburg counties.
