Black cat helps catch wanted man hiding from police

The presence of a black cat proved to be very unlucky for a 23-year-old Ephrata man wanted on an outstanding Lancaster County bench warrant.

Jonathan Michael Steffy was arrested after the cat helped police find the fugitive in the backyard of a home on Duke Street, police said. Steffy was arrested Nov. 28 without incident.

Police initially set up a perimeter on the block to search for Steffy after he fled officers who located him in the backyard. While searching for Steffy, one officer noticed the feline in another home's backyard crouched and watching something intently near a shed.

The officer checked the shed, but didn't find anything, police said. The cat again focused on something near another shed, the officer checked the second location and found Steffy.
