Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown reintroduces anti-hazing bill in US Senate after BGSU student dies
Following the death of Bowling Green State University student Stone Foltz earlier this month, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown announced Wednesday during a telephone news conference with reporters that he and several other lawmakers reintroduced anti-hazing legislation in the U.S. Senate last week that would increase transparency on college campuses.
Brown is one of several co-sponsors of the Report and Educate About Campus Hazing Act, or REACH Act, alongside the bill's lead sponsor, Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
The REACH Act would require hazing incidents to be reported as part of a college’s annual crime report, establish a definition of hazing to clarify what constitutes a reportable offense and require colleges and universities to establish a campus-wide, research-based program to educate students about the dangers of hazing.
“We have to do more to stop these student deaths. Parents shouldn’t have to worry for their child’s safety because they join a fraternity or a sorority,” Brown said.
