Edited to add - Well, not that the new flag is "Woke", but the idea that a new flag was needed is what they consider "woke". That's explained a little further down /end edit.

Besides the colors, what some people like about it, including me, is that the dark blue is approximately the shape of Minnesota.
Best of all, the repukes hate it. For that reason alone, even if it was filthy ugly, I would be all for it.

The offensive nature of the design ((of the old flag)) is not a new notion, either. In 1983, the state seal and flag were slightly tweaked. While the pre-1983 iteration showed the Indigenous figure riding away from the settler, the modified version angled the rider slightly toward them ((towards the settler)).

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, refused to use the old flag.

The flag was also criticized on an aesthetic level, with detractors noting it violated principles of "good flag design," according to the North American Vexillological Association — meaningful symbols, just a few colors and no lettering or seals. Others criticized it for being too similar to other state flags.

Some Republican state lawmakers tried to halt the rollout of the new flag, arguing Minnesotans deserved more of a say in the matter, but their efforts floundered in the Democrat-controlled legislature.

The unveiling is the culmination of a competition to redesign the flag and state seal to replace one that showed native peoples being driven off their land.

One has to magnify the images to see the farmer-settler and the native American on horseback. Hover your mouse over the image (don't click!
finger off the mouse buttons!) and hit your Control key twice. If that doesn't work then hover over the image -- at the upper right side there appears some square-looking symbol with a little circle in the middle. Hover over that (don't click it) and 2 more icons should appear on the right side. The bottom right one should be a menu (...) icon. Click on that and choose the magnify choice. One can further magnify by holding down the Control key while turning the mouse wheel.

I have to say, though that I am surprised at the submissions... When CO asked for design submissions for a new license plate to represent 150 years of statehood, the submissions included some incredible options--some that I'd have gladly framed. 'Not quite sure I was seeing that among the flags... (no offense intended--just an observation)

3. My favorite one was different too -- a swirling white and blue ribbon. It was one of the 3 finalists.

Edited to add - the OP's article (link just below) shows a few more -- ones I've never seen before -- some are very interesting.

The new one doesn't really reference anything.

8. These Minnesotans celebrated the new flag with costumes, laser loon earrings and Lutheran sushi

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2024/05/12/new-minnesota-state-flag-party-celebration-costumes-laser-loon-lutheran-sushi

one man took it to another level — he hosted a Minnesota-themed party in celebration of the new flag.

...

The afternoon at Nelson’s party started with the Minnesota state song, “Hail! Minnesota.”

Costumes were encouraged — anything Minnesota themed. Nelson and his boyfriend, Wesley Noble, dressed as Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Adam Smith and Keely Schultz dressed as a Minnesota red pine and the new flag, complete with laser loon earrings.

ther costumes included an abstract loon, a lady slipper (the state flower), and a few other flag-inspired looks.

Guests played pin the star on the flag, crafted their own flags and indulged in classic Minnesota cuisine — blueberry muffins (the official state muffin), Minnesota shaped cookies, Lutheran sushi (also known as Minnesota sushi or ham and pickle wraps), pigs in a blanket and more.

...

Lots of great pictures at the link
