Why an anti-abortion amendment to the Kentucky Constitution sets a dangerous precedent
With a very misleading preamble, a proposed amendment is on the ballot this November. It reads:
"To protect human life, nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion."
Constitutions are designed to protect rights and constrain the government from exerting its power over personal autonomy, not to prohibit the exercise of rights and expand the reach of political powers that be, this proposed amendment is both gluttonous and dangerous.
Further, protecting human life looks nothing like an amendment restricting abortion and looks more like policies that address racism, poverty, universal health care, etc. There is nothing pro-life about regulating the health care choices of a private citizen. Nothing.
