Waterloo elects its first black mayor

WATERLOO | Quentin Hart will go down in the history books as Waterloo's first African-American mayor.
But the 44-year-old was looking beyond breaking that barrier after defeating former Mayor Tim Hurley by a wide margin in Tuesday's mayoral runoff election.
"I am African-American, and I'm proud of who I am and who my family raised me to be," Hart said. "But being the best mayor of Waterloo is what means something, being a progressive mayor to help deal with some of the challenges we have means the most to me.

Unofficial election results showed Hart taking 58.7 percent of the vote and winning 5,222 to 3,614. He won in 20 of 30 voting precincts and won the absentee balloting 764 votes to 292.
