Al Lawson considers challenging Brown in new district

Former state sen. Al Lawson is seriously considering a bid against U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown now that her congressional district is likely to be redrawn, and could stretch west from her hometown of Jacksonville all the way to his hometown of Tallahassee.

Brown on Wednesday plans to file a federal lawsuit to stop the redrawing of the district, saying it will unlawfully reduce African-Americans’ ability to elect a representative of their choosing, which she argues is a violation of the Voting Rights Act.

But Lawson, who is a black Democrat like Brown, says she might be trying to avoid campaigning in a new, more-competitive district.

Lawson also took a shot at Brown for saying “Jacksonville, Florida, has nothing in common with North Florida.”
