(35,340 posts)can afford to live there unless you are a millionaire. A friend of mine has over 20 acres of yard, a 1 acre pond, his home and
a separate 4 car garage. He could probably get a 1 million for it here, he has relatives that live in California tell him it would sell for
at least 20 million there.

(24,300 posts)and the coastline, there's plenty of reasonably priced housing in California. Not everyone in the state lives in Silicon Valley or Beverly Hills.

(24,300 posts)California is a huge state. If you can handle a little bad weather you can live on less income. When we downsized for retirement a few years ago we sold a ten year old 1,600 sq ft house for 260K, and it was on a golf course. The HOA fees were $86 a year. Property taxes were $1,800 a year. Right now I'm living in a mobile home in a very nice senior park. The mobile home is worth about 35K and the space rent is under $500 a month.

(11,660 posts)Rents and mortgages are sky high and wages arent commensurate here. In NYC, its the same for housing but at least wages are higher.
