San Francisco Chronicle / May 28, 2020
Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said Thursday that he will stop enforcing the countys shelter-in-place order on June 1 because he believes the past and current orders put significant restrictions on our freedoms.
In a Facebook post, Essick said the countys initial and subsequent health orders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic have been far more restrictive than guidelines in neighboring counties and in statewide orders.
He said the county which has reported 531 coronavirus cases and 4 deaths as of Thursday has dramatically increased its testing capacity which he said has shown the infection rate is under control and decreasing. County officials have conducted 23,362 coronavirus tests, according to county data.

The sheriff's announcement came the same week that Sonoma Countys public health officer said she will hold off on allowing the reopening of some businesses because of a recent rise in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

Such a disturbing trend ... politicians, law enforcement, private citizens, etc. usurping science and scientists because of their own moral righteousness.
This asshole -- a sheriff -- was specifically elected by people to promote safety and protect them from harm. I hope they kick him out of office.

(5,948 posts)your freedoms go bye bye during a pandemic for the simple reason that you do not have the freedom to spread a deadly plague. Your freedoms also go bye bye during war. They also go bye bye during a natural disaster. This pinhead sherriff needs to be arrested on public endangerment charges.

(12,712 posts)Let's see, what is a sheriff's job? To legislate? No.
My understanding is that the legislators enact laws that the sheriff is legally obliged to uphold and enforce. If such a law enforcer is unable to uphold that duty they they should be removed for not abiding by the terms and conditions. This is rebellion, not law enforcement. Neglecting your duty is no acceptable. A verbal protest is enough.
Otherwise, there either is no law, or you have petty tyrants making their own. It sets a very bad precedent. If they don't like the laws, they can quit in protest. Who do these people think they are? Are they promoting themselves?

(32,017 posts)... is that law enforcement officers have broad discretion to either enforce or not enforce a given law as they see fit. This has always been the case, afaik.

Maybe all of that was true in old England but it's not true now.
