Just a reminder and share it with people you know -- You can check your registration online to be sure (by County):

Take a screengrab with your phone so you have it with you when you vote... just in case!
In California the official designation is "No Party Preference" (formerly known as "decline-to-state" voters). If you are registered as "No Party Preference" then you can choose between Democratic Party, American Independent Party, and Libertarian Party ballots, or just have a "No Party Preference" ballot. You have to be registered as either Democratic Party or "No Party Preference" by May 23, 2016. BUT, if you are registered "No Party Preference" then you will also have to tell your county registrar of voters that you want the Democratic Party ballot. If you are in a precinct that votes by mail, and they mail you a ballot for "No Party Preference" and you want to vote the Democratic Party ballot, then you need to call or go to your elections department and tell them you want the ballot for the Democratic Party and they will exchange your ballot.
If you haven't already registered to vote... a little info below
(skip if you have registered already):
_______________
REGISTERING TO VOTE:
Reminder: You MUST BE REGISTERED AS either 'Democratic Party' or 'NO PARTY PREFERENCE' to vote for Democrats -- they are not the same thing as 'American Independent', so be aware.
With all the chatter that California has a semi-open primary, it can be a bit confusing for first time voters who think INDEPENDENT is the same as 'No Party Preference', so please mention it as a quick note to anyone you know who is voting.... especially newbies. Yes, you are an 'American', and yes, you want to be 'Independent' about your vote, but NO, you will not be able to vote in the Democratic Primary if you are registered as 'American Independent'.
Register as a DEMOCRATIC or NO PARTY PREFERENCE by MONDAY, May 23 (but do it now so you won't get stuck and can verify things)

... hope this helps ....
and just so it is even more confusing, I have been told that No Party Preference, Undeclared, Unaffiliated, or some variation thereof will also work, but I suggest 'No Party Preference' as it is the term they use all over their online forms and leaves little room for argument.

(10,136 posts)who is also a permanent mail voter, I got a post card from the Santa Clara registrar about 3 weeks ago asking me whether I wanted a Democratic, American Independent, Libertarian or NP ballot in June.
It would be nice if they'd add it to the site, though.

(19,926 posts)I've never heard of that but it says that's what I am but I should be No Party, have been since NAFTA. But it also says I can vote in the Presidential Primary.
Is that a real party? I can't find anything about it?
