When you fly the airways, your route takes you over a series of these sites. Before the days of autopilots coupled to GPS receivers, it was a small challenge to fly directly over the VOR. Long cross country trips in a relatively slow airplane gets a little boring at times, so actually spotting the VOR down below you is a little game that's fun to play. I like to say, "tally-ho on the taco stand!"
