A bit of insomnia led me outside to get this view of the waxing gibbous moon. Hope you enjoy!

(2,656 posts)I enjoy observing the changing shapes of the moon throughout the course of the seasons. On December 21, the diameter of the half moon was perpendicular with the horizon. On March 21, it was at a 45-degree angle. Here, on May 2, the diameter is halfway between 45 degrees and perpendicular, which it will reach on June 21. Today's date is three months from Candlemas, otherwise known as Groundhog Day here in Western Pennsylvania. Yes, these dates halfway between equinox and solstice (and halfway between solstice and equinox, such as Candlemas) can produce some odd shapes of the moon when its phase it just right, as it is tonight. Thank you for posting your excellent, high resolution photo of tonight's insomnia-triggering moon.

(2,656 posts)I, too, woke up last night about when the moon was at the high point of its arc. I proceeded to do some paperwork for a few hours. Before I went back to sleep after 4:00 AM EDT, I saw your post and commented on it. Thanks for your inspiration in developing a backstory for the May 2nd moon.
